Arbores Vocalis

giving voice to a sense of tree

A site specific commission for Lesnes Abbey & Woods, South London.

Gathering over 100 interviews with people walking & spending time in Lesnes Abbey Woods during the lockdowns of early 2021. Asking them to describe some of the intangible sense spending time amongst tree's gives us.

Combined with recording a dispersed Bexley Music Choir singing a Plainsong style song, composed in a collaboration between Thor McIntyre-Burnie & Jeremy Jackman.  Exploring the Latin names of the tree's that grow in these woods and lyrics inspired from the interviews.

A 16 channel immersive sound & light Installation installed in Lesness Abbey ruins.

You are invited to enter the Abbey Ruins cloister and walk within the many voices that alternate between periods of song and periods of spoken word in a 20 min composition, weaving your own tapestry of words, song and sensations.

The abbey re-awakened by a cloud of voices that speak & sing of the sanctuary of trees

Presented as part of Light The Way  a 1 mile illuminated trail that linked Thamesmead with Lesnes Abbey Woods.

Commissioned by:  London Borough of Bexley. Emergency Exit Art . Peabody. Heritage Lottery Fund .
