About Aswarm About Aswarm "Sound can both play with a space
and coax ‘us’ into playing with ‘it"

Founded by Artist & Sound Designer, Thor McIntyre-Burnie, Aswarm has evolved into a small dynamic team of creative experts. Working collaboratively, we make incredible things happen. We draw on the creative use of Sound, Digital Technology, Immersive Installation, Site-Specifics and Concept to make art, politics and play happen where it matters.

We create artworks that are inherently interactive and dynamic in nature. By creating scenarios and interventions, our work invites and enables people to interact and play with their world in new and progressive ways. Questioning the role of public space and exploring the potential of art to bring about change.

The term ’a-swarm’ describes both a dynamic entity and an event/happening, and it is this relationship between the tangible + intangible; between physical place or object + invisible sound-waves; between artwork + intervention or spectator + co-creator that underpins much of our work.

Aswarm (ə-swôrm′) : Filled with things in motion: the garden was aswarm with bees.

Our projects range from solo artist works to full production teams, drawing on a tight team of specialists whose work we admire and trust and a wider network of creative professionals, scientists, researchers, architects, historians, designers and technologists.

What is an aswarm work?

A flock of speakers occupy a square, providing a means to walk within the Twittersphere; an exploded orchestra re-activates a victorian mill; an urban tree may become a trigger for an AR-Statue of a civil rights activist that breaths; a bandstand is re-awakened as an ear to a historic mound of earth; a derelict piers starling bird colony becomes a digital Ghost Roost; A touring shipping container a place for warehouse nightshift workers to understand sleep; a lift becomes a musical playback device to play synaesthetic twister; a village green becomes a Hug-bag training gym; a team of ghostbuster-esque Vearo’s offer shoppers in an Asda in Hull, the means to physically ‘hold’ their own voice!     – we make work – you actively experience! – in the places you least expect!

WE ALSO DO: SOUND DESIGN

Sound Design collaborations

In addition to producing our own projects we also often work in collaboration on the sound design of productions and interactive installations.

As well as a practicing artist, our director Thor has also built a breadth of experience working as a Sound Designer for live performance and Interactive design. An established figure in the outdoor arts sector he’s built a strong reputation for sound for site-specific performance, theatre and dance outside conventional venues. – It’s not all muddy boots & head torch’s though, the European award winning Soundspace which we co-designed in a unique £1.2 million Nesta funded partnership with Dutch firm Northern Light, at Eureka Children’s Museum is a slick interactive exhibition that is still running 15 yrs on!

ARTS IN EDUCATION - Post Grad Lecturing

Arts In Education & post Grad Lecturing

Drawing on our breadth of experience across both these fields we design creative learning spaces and deliver educational projects with schools.

As a postgraduate lecturer Thor also regularly teaches in the fields of Communications Design, Architecture, Theatre and Sound Design (Incl: Central St.Martins MA, Birkbeck MA, Brighton University BA, Aachen University (Germany) MA.

CONSULTATION AND MENTORING

Consultation & Mentoring

With over 20 years experience working outside cultural institutions we recognise there just aren’t many people or companies with the breadth of experience we hold in this curious niche. So we often work across sectors: advising, mentoring and as creative consultants. Often advising professionals from Music, Theatre, Dance, Design and Gallery arts on how to adapt their work or productions offsite, in public, outdoor, spatialised and unpredictable scenarios.
